Who is lancer

Cu Chulainn means "Hound of Culann". The name comes from an oath Setanta made when he was a child, when he mistakenly killed a guard dog of a wealthy merchant named Culann. He served as Culann's guard while another guard dog is reared.

Cu Chulainn grew up to be a strong man and went into an evil land called the Country of Shadows. He was well liked by the ruler of that country, the witch Scathach , and he trained under her and learned many sorceries and techniques. He obtained the cursed lance Gae Bolg that later became the symbol of Cu Chulainn. In the legend, it is said that Cu Chulainn was brave, compassionate, and a likeable young man. Celtic warriors had the custom of making an oath called a "geas", and those warriors broke this geas were cursed.

This geas later became the cause of his death. During a battle with an opposing country, to protect his weaker country of Ulster, Cu Chulainn made several geasa accepting even his own ruin in exchange for forcing the opposing country to make geasa unfavorable to them.

The leader of the opposing country, Queen Maeve conducted several schemes that forced Cu Chulainn to break his geasa, causing him to lose all his powers and finally killed. Cu Chulainn will not allow himself to die lying down and tied himself to a post.

Morrigan , the goddess of death and destruction was impressed by Cu Chulainn's chivalry offered to protect him, which Cu Chulainn declined. Morrigan was offended and transformed into an animal three times to interfere with his battles but Cu Chulainn injured her each time. Cu Chulainn later accidentally healed her wounds. Morrigan admired his chivalry and watched over him until the end of his life. Lancer first appeared to attack Rin when she tried to dispel the boundary field in her school.

Rin's Servant Archer dueled against Lancer until he suddenly noticed Shirou's presence. Lancer then hunted him down and stabbed him in the heart in accordance to the rules of the war to not allow any witnesses of the Holy Grail War. Later that night, Lancer hunted Shirou down again to his home when he summoned Saber who dueled Lancer. He then retreated, stating that his Master only wants him to scout all the Masters of the war. Late on the Fate route, Shirou visited the church to seek advise from Kotomine regarding Gilgamesh.

Shirou was then captured and Saber came to his rescue. Lancer did not agree with Kotomine's actions and decided to rebel against him.

He allowed Shirou and Saber to escape but was killed by Gilgamesh. He expressed his interest in Rin. The next day, Lancer dueled Archer when they assaulted the church. The main Noble Phantasm ability Gae Bolg has is it will always strike at the heart, bending causality itself to do so. The second is that the curse becomes more powerful by hurling it full-on. This character can be more than just a Lancer as a Servant. Because of his well-known history of going wild in battle, he can also become a Berserker, but this isn't something that he's ever done before.

In Grand Order, he's known instead under the name of Setanta, and his ability to become a Caster is something he takes pride in even though he's best as a Lancer. Originally, Cu Chulainn's real name was Setanta. He changed it when he was working under King Conchobar, and wound up having to kill a guard dog to protect a master blacksmith, named Culann's home.

The guard dog was known for its strength, and was supposedly stronger than ten men, but that didn't stop Cu from ending it. The master blacksmith was down by having lost his guard dog, and Setanta pledged his life to work under Culann, promising to be his guard dog. Instead, they pledged him to protect the country of Ulster itself, beginning his legend.

Interestingly, Lancer's power is limited because of the battle of the Holy Grail War's location. As it turns out, each hero has greater power when in a country where everyone knows their legend.

In Japan, some heroes are better known than others, and since Chu Chulainn's legend isn't really known that well, he's weaker than he otherwise would be. In his home country, he would have access to a completely different Noble Phantasm as well. His focus is primarily on spreading the word on obscure anime, comic books, and games whenever possible. He has Lancer go out on reconnaissance, and scout the locations and identies of other Masters and gauge how dangerous their Servants are.

During his fight with Archer, Lancer noticed that Shirou Emiya had witnessed his entire battle. Believing Shirou to be an ordinary human, to preserve the secrecy of the Holy Grail War, Lancer silences Shirou by stabbing him through his heart. Later, Lancer realizes that Shirou has recovered from his mortal wound, so he tracks and corners the young mage within the shed of his home estate.

Before Lancer is able to strike a mortal blow, Shirou is rescued by the recently summoned Servant, Saber , who then engages Lancer in combat. Outmatched, Lancer flees the scene just before the arrival of Archer and his master. In Fate, Shirou is lured to Kotomine's church, and once again wounded by Lancer.

Saber eventually arrives to rescue Shirou. After events unfold, Kotomine reveals his other Servant, Gilgamesh, the Archer from the previous war. Kotomine orders the both of them to kill Saber and Shirou, and leaves. Lancer, disgusted by Kotomine keeping Gilgamesh's existence a secret from him, and by Gilgamesh himself, decides to rebel against Kirei. Though he claims he is doing it out of hatred for Gilgamesh and Kotomine, and not to help them, Lancer chooses to fight Gilgamesh and thereby aids Shirou and Saber in escaping.

He is then defeated by Gilgamesh. In Unlimited Blade Works, after being driven out of his church by Caster, and faking his death, Kotomine orders Lancer to cooperate with Shirou and Rin. Lancer helps them with their plan to defeat Caster by fighting Archer to distract him, so that Rin and Shirou are able to enter the church. Ostensibly defeating Archer, but choosing not to conclude their battle, he later reappears to offer his aid again to Shirou and Saber after Rin is captured.

Upon rescuing Rin, Kirei suddenly appears and orders Lancer to kill Rin. In addition to his previous disgust with Kotomine, Lancer has come to admire Rin, and therefore refuses his order.

In response to this, Kotomine uses a Command Seal to force Lancer to give himself a mortal wound. However, before he fades away, Lancer manages to kill Kotomine, and bids goodbye to Rin. Before his death, he sets the Einzbern castle on fire. In Heaven's Feel, upon sensing a disturbance at the Ryudou Temple, Lancer investigates it as per his orders by Kotomine to scout the competition. He discovers and engages in battle with True Assassin, but during the battle, he is attacked and killed while his heart is consumed by the True Assassin; then his body is absorbed by the black shadow of Avenger and Sakura.

He is normally spotted fishing at the Fuyuki docks, but he is frequently seen wandering the city or at his part-time job as a grocer. He is quite amiable, chatting with many of the former Holy Grail War participants, and is well liked. Nearly every female character in the game is subject to a pick-up attempt. Or in Shirou's words, "Harassment" These attempts tend to work out well, thanks to not downplaying his Servant qualities.

He makes no attempt to combat the Shadow Wolf Beasts during the Fuyuki eclipse, instead quietly presiding over Avenger's ascent into Heaven's Feel from a distance. Lancer has prevalent role in the Fate segments of Carnival Phantasm and also acts as part of a running gag involving his death.

He constantly is "killed" within a segment in each episode aside from the second.
