Terrific documentary which, when many similar films see how much information, talking heads, etc. None more so than the central gymnast who we never hear talk about her experience to the camera.

We don't even know until the end of the film her level of proficiency. We are just immersed in her world, which allows us, the viewer, to make our own judgements. A superb yet soul-crushing cinematic memoir of Russian gymnastics prodigy Margarita Mamun that chronicles the grueling days of endless training leading up to her gold-winning performance at the Olympics in Brazil.

As far as sports documentaries go, this is quite unusual as it completely eschews interviews and voice-over narration, relying instead on well-edited, candid moments to tell a story. This gives the impression of watching a non-documentary sports drama, and it is such a compelling one at that.

At its core, the movie is an exercise in athletic tenacity that is bound to inspire many. At the same time, however, it also paints a debilitating portrait of pain, both physical and psychological—and shockingly so. A looming family tragedy magnifies the suffering even more. But throughout it all, Mamun displays a stoicism that is nothing short of admirable. One of the best sports documentaries of the past decade.
