The filter functions in 'AND' style, meaning if not all type of filtered items are there, it will extract none. For example if you connect the pipe to a chest and specify dirt and cobble in your filter then the pipe will only extract dirt and cobble, leaving other materials in the chest.

If the chest runs out of either dirt or cobble then it will stop extracting altogether as it will wait for there to be both materials before continuing.
