Quintero said the officers originally spotted the SUV, which had been reported stolen, traveling at more than mph on the Freeway. When the officers tried to pull the vehicle over for speeding, the suspects refused to stop and led them on a short chase, he said. Quintero said the officers came under fire as they attempted to approach the vehicle.
About two hours later, one suspect was found hiding and arrested. She explained that her son, who also has liver damage due to excessive iron in his system, has designated donors at UCLA, and she felt that there are others in more need of the blood collected at the drive.
And just as important, Quintero said, the blood drive would spread the word of the importance of blood donation. The donors could be sick or be pregnant, or any number of reasons, Quintero explained, and not be able to donate for any particular week. She was shocked by the diagnosis. Her biggest fear is that she will be left alone to raise John Paul and his sister, Jacqueleen, 8.
There is no cure, and according to the ALS Association, about half of all people with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis live at least three years after they find out they have the disease, and 20 percent live five years or more.
